During the 1973 cruise of the BIOGAS deep-sea program, a series of 83 frames showing a high population density of the isocrinid stalked crinoid Diplocrinus (Annacrinus) wyvillethomsoni was obtained from a depth of 1246 m on the bathyal slope of the Bay of Biscay. The spatial distribution of D. wyvillethomsoni appears to be highly aggregated. Mean density is 0.61 m-² with confidence limits determined as 0.53 and 0.69 m-², ranging up to 8 or 10 specimens m-² on a sea floor with pebbles and rocks. D. wyvillethomsoni forms a parabolic filtration fan with its arms strongly recurved into the current. The distal group of cirri grips pebbles or the sharp upper edges of rocks. This active mode of anchorage contrasts with the passive mode in other genera of... |

The synthesis of literature and personal observations permitted to show the main morphological physiological and genetic characteristics with relation to the mode of life of abyssal echinoderms. The large ventral sole is common among holothuroids and asteroids which creep on the bottom. The development of large podia and their ability to swim are particular to the abyssal family Elasipoda (Holothurioidea). The paper gives examples of opposite skeleton constitution either heavily or lightly calcified. The little knowledge about the biology of these animals shows the absence of a strict diet and of a particular mode of reproduction. [NOT CONTROLLED OCR] |

:During Walda cruise of the "Jean Charcot", 21 Asterids species were collected in the abyssal plain of South East Atlantic. Two new species are described : Dytaster cherbonnieri and Benthopecten chardyi. The analysis of infraspecific variations of Freyella spinosa makes doubtfull the validity of F. spinosa var. abyssicola. Most species are widely distributed in the whole atlantic Ocean ; they were previously known merely from the Northern Atlantic. The Walvis ridge does not appear as a boundary for the dispersion of the Asterids. [NOT CONTROLLED OCR] |

Like hydrothermal vents along oceanic ridges, cold seeps are patchy and isolated ecosystems along continental margins, extending from bathyal to abyssal depths. The Atlantic Equatorial Belt (AEB), from the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of Guinea, was one focus of the Census of Marine Life ChEss (Chemosynthetic Ecosystems) program to study biogeography of seep and vent fauna. We present a review and analysis of collections from five seep regions along the AEB: the Gulf of Mexico where extensive faunal sampling has been conducted from 400 to 3300m, the Barbados accretionary prism, the Blake ridge diapir, and in the Eastern Atlantic from the Congo and Gabon margins and the recently explored Nigeria margin. Of the 72 taxa identified at the species level, a total... |

The study of abyssal benthic communities which begun at the Centre Océanologique de Bretagne in 1969 has been pursued during the seven cruises BIOGAS carried out from 1972 to 1974, devoted to the intensive exploration of a restricted area in the Gulf of Biscay. The frequency and total number of cruises conducted at different periods of the year enable to collect adequately large amonts of data in order to describe the faunal assemblages, to evaluate density and diversity of the fauna as well as assumed biological rythms. Six stations located on soft bottoms between 1800 m and 4700 min the north west and south east of the Gulf of Biscay have been choosen. Each station has been sampled several times with various types of gears each of them selecting a given... |

Sea cucumbers of the Molpadonia order are average size animals, frequently found on deep muddy sea bottoms. The Molpadonia order, often reorganized by Clark (2), Heding (3), Deichman (4) and Pawson (5), currently consists of four families. Several abnormally small specimens, of a new genus, possibly belonging to the Molpadiidae, were collected with an epibenthic drag during the Polygas (October 1972) and Biogas 4 (February 1974) cruises at the following stations. |

A giant pockmark colonised by dense cold-seep assemblages near 3160 m depth along the Congo-Angola margin has been surveyed by the ROV Victor 6000. The quantitative distribution of chemosynthetic communities was mapped along the dive tracks from a video study using GIS and image mosaicking. Several types of faunal assemblages, either dominated by bivalves of the families Mytilidae (Bathmodiolus sp.) Vesicom idae (Calyptogena sp., 'Vesicomya' aff. chuni), or by Siboglinidae polychaetes (Escarpia southwardae) were mapped over the 800-m diameter pockmark area and sampled for fauna, water and sediment. The isotopic analyses (delta C-13) of tissues from symbiont-bearing species were within the range typical of nutrition via symbiosis using methane for mussels... |

Employing a new techniques, the chromosomes of two species of abyssal echinoderms have been studied. The karyological data here presented for four species further support the hypothesis that chromosome numbers are incredibly stable in the phylum Echinodermata. This stability can be overcome in aberrant group of recent origin, as it is proved for Pourtalesia jeffreysi. A remarkable variability of chromosome morphology has been observed in species belonging to different classes. [NOT CONTROLLED OCR] |

Deep-sea ecosystems represent the largest biome of the global biosphere, but knowledge of their biodiversity is still scant. The Mediterranean basin has been proposed as a hot spot of terrestrial and coastal marine biodiversity but has been supposed to be impoverished of deep-sea species richness. We summarized all available information on benthic biodiversity (Prokaryotes, Foraminifera, Meiofauna, Macrofauna, and Megafauna) in different deep-sea ecosystems of the Mediterranean Sea (200 to more than 4,000 m depth), including open slopes, deep basins, canyons, cold seeps, seamounts, deep-water corals and deep-hypersaline anoxic basins and analyzed overall longitudinal and bathymetric patterns. We show that in contrast to what was expected from the sharp... |

The long-term BIOZAIRE multidisciplinary deep-sea environmental program on the West Equatorial African margin organized in partnership between Ifremer and TOTAL aimed at characterizing the benthic community structure in relation with physical and chemical processes in a region of oil and gas interest. The morphology of the deep Congo submarine channel and the sedimentological structures of the deep-sea fan were established during the geological ZAIANGO project and helped to select study sites ranging from 350 to 4800 m water depth inside or near the channel and away from its influence. Ifremer conducted eight deep-sea cruises on board research vessels between 2000 and 2005. Standardized methods of sampling together with new technologies such as the ROV... |

The observation of a series of young individuals of growing size, belonging to the abyssal species Plutonaster bifrons (Wyv. Thomson), with scanning electron microscopy, shows the appearance and development of morphological structures. An animal of R = 5.55 mm presents enough characters to identify the species, but if its size is smaller than R = 0.85 mm, one witnesses a significant development of some specific characters. |

This paper describes some stages of gametogony and sporogony of Ixoreis psychropotae ng. nsp., hemal and digestive sporozoan parasite of the abyssal holothurian Psychropotes longicauda.Through the trophozoïte development, this sporozoan is closely related to Coccidia. The uninucleate sporoblasts are formed out of the nuclei that appear on the copula's surface. The cysts, extremely numerous in certain areas, have n sporokysts containing each 2 sporozoïtes. The possibilities of cyts' elimination are discussed. [NOT CONTROLLED OCR] |

Since the last survey of the distribution of the echinoderm fauna in the deep sea, worked out by MADSEN, more than 100 trawlings in various areas of the Atlantic Ocean give new possibilities of characterizing the faunal assemblages of several basins at depths greater than 1800 m. During 12 cruises conducted by the Centre Océanologique de Bretagne, seven atlantic basins (Cape, Angola, European, Labrador, Greenland, and Norwegian Basins) have been intensively prospected. Comparisons of the asteroid faunas (43 species on the whole) are approached with appropriate similarity index, especially the second Kulczynski coefficient, and estimates of density and diversity of the fauna art : analysed within each basin for two ranges of depths (and 3000 m). The... |

A giant 800-m-diameter pockmark named REGAB was discovered on the Gabon continental margin actively emitting methane at a water depth of 3200 m. The microbial diversity in sediments from four different assemblages of chemosynthetic organisms, Mytilidae, Vesicomyidae, Sibogliniclae and a bacterial mat, was investigated using comparative 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis. Aggregates of anaerobic methanotrophic archaea (ANME-2) and bacteria of the Desulfosarcina/Desulfococcus cluster were found in all four chemosynthetic habitats. Fluorescence in situ hybridization targeting the ANME-2/Desulfosarcina/Desulfococcus aggregates showed their presence few centimeters (3-5cm) below the surface of sediment. 16S rRNA gene sequences from all known marine ANME groups... |

During the Polymede II cruise conducted by the R.S. "Jean-Charcot" and organized by the Scientifc department of the C.O.B., two sectors of the Ionian Sea have been the focus of a biological study of the benthic populations: the abyssal plain of Messine (abyssal being used here in its topographic meaning, that is to say a central basin away from the coast), and the Matapan South trench, to the south-west of the Peloponnesus. Samples were taken using an epibenthic drag with an automatic closing system enabling the catch of pelagic animals during the haulback and the loss of benthic samples. |

Deep-sea mussels of the genus Bathymodiolus (Bivalvia: Mytilidae) harbor symbiotic bacteria in their gills and are among the dominant invertebrate species at cold seeps and hydrothermal vents. An undescribed Bathymodiolus species was collected at a depth of 3,150 m in a newly discovered cold seep area on the southeast Atlantic margin, close to the Zaire channel. Transmission electron microscopy, comparative 16S rRNA analysis, and fluorescence in situ hybridization indicated that this Bathymodiolus sp. lives in a dual symbiosis with sulfide- and methane-oxidizing bacteria. A distinct distribution pattern of the symbiotic bacteria in the gill epithelium was observed, with the thiotrophic symbiont dominating the apical region and the methanotrophic symbiont... |

During the " Jean Charcot " cruise Polymed II, 18 species of the 5 classes of Echinodermata have been collected in 15 samples from the bathyal zone of the Alboran sea. Most species are already known from the Mediterranean and the North East Atlantic. Some rare species (Odontaster mediterranea, Ophiactis balli) have been collected, and two others (Neocomatella europaea. Henricia abyssalis) are recorded for the first time in the Mediterranean. Endemic distributions of Ceramaster hystricis and Ophiocten abyssicolum are discussed. The Echinoderms population of the Alboran sea is noteworthy for its Atlantic characteristic, which is besides, dominating in the North part of this area. The atlantic biogeographical relationships of the Echinoderm fauna of the... |
